The Andes Mountains was formed in the jurassic period as the result of the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate.
It has 7000 km ( 4400 miles) long (the world´s longest exposed mountain range) with an average high of 4000 mt. (13000 ft) , located along the western shore of South America starting as a natural boarder for Chile and Argentina and extending to the north trought Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela where it submerge into the Caribbean Sea. It highest peak is Aconcagua that rises to 6962 mt (22841 ft.) also the highest mountain range outside Asia.
The Andes Snow line decreases from northern tropical Andes between 4500 mt and 5000 mt high (14760 ft and 16400 ft.) decending while it goes to the South in Central Chile and Argentina andean region where snow line is between 2500 mt and 3300 mt. high, (8200 ft and 11400 ft.) that is also the skiable region of the Andes.
Andes Mountain exclusive ski and snowboard areas are located only in Chile and Argentina central Andes Mountain region, being Chile the most developed country in this matter with the best accomodation facilities and the best skiing and snowboard areas at only a few hours from pacific coast shore and beaches.
The chilean Andes has a very good snow quality with acceptance of professional skiers and snowboarders all over the world that every season comes to Chile to accomplish theire trainment.
The central Andes snow is lighter and dryer, season goes from mid June to first days of October, there are very good chances of having a week or two of clear blue skies and a good amount of snow accumulation, snow storms commonly last not more than three days and are often very intense and gives a lot of fresh powder snow to enjoy.
The Southern good ski areas has a little bit longer season that starts from late May untill October, snow quality is also very good and turns more heavier and thicker than in the central Andes area, some times snow storms can last a little bit longer too offering the perfect scene to enjoy hot springs and spa facilities.
It is very possible to enjoy huge amounts of powder snow in both of the andean regions for skiing and snowboarding in Chile.
Central Andes Mountain is very accesible from it´s capital Santiago, no trees, blue skyes, 3000 mt (9800 ft ) high skiing with nice accomodation facilities.The best and worth visiting ski and snowboard areas are : Portillo, de eldest and more traditional ski area in Chile, El Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado all world class ski areas that all together becomes the biggest and the best skiing and snowboarding area of Southern Emisphere with 2400 hectares (5930 acres) of skiable areas.
Southern Andes Mountain has also very good skiing and snowboarding areas in wich the best and worth visiting skiing areas are Nevados de Chillan (ex Termas de Chillán) that in English means Chillán Hot Springs and Villarica Volcano skiing area at the local and fun chilean tipical town Pucon.
